Gilfield Missionary Baptist Church Church History
Rehoboth Church was organized in 1851. Permission was granted to the slaves to join the church and they were received into membership.
According to the Choctaw Historical Society (1880 edition) Rehoboth Church had 120 black peopls.
In December 1868, the colored portion of Rehoboth Church was asked to take letters from the church, organize into a separate body a_ndbuild a house for their worship. However, they were permitted to use Rehoboth (the white people’s church) until the organization was accomplished.
In May 1870, a committee was appointed to advise the colored brethren with the best course to pursue in building their church. In 1874, letters of dismissal were granted to the colored members for the purpose of organizing into a separate body.
Interestingly enough, the church began under a brush arbor and a few months later, a frame building was erected. As a result, The Gilfield Missionary Baptist Church was founded in 1874 and Rev. Daniel Wilson was the first pastor.
On November 16, 1885, Ed McCall, an administrator of the estate of the deceased John Cuny executed a deed of five acres of land to the deacons of the Gilfield Missionary Baptist Church in lieu of the original deed, which had been lost.
